Today I bought a pork shoulder from Walmart, planning to grind it for a recipe.

Turning a Walmart Pork Shoulder into Something Amazing

Today I came home from Walmart with a fresh pork shoulder—a cut I love for its versatility, flavor, and value. Instead of roasting it whole, I had a different plan in mind: grinding it for a homemade recipe. Pork shoulder is ideal for grinding because of its natural balance of lean meat and fat, which creates a rich, juicy texture perfect for sausages, meatballs, dumplings, and countless other dishes.

After unwrapping the shoulder, I trimmed away any excess silver skin while keeping the flavorful fat intact. Then it was time to cube the meat, chill it slightly, and run it through the grinder. Watching those fresh strands of pork come out of the machine is always satisfying—there’s a world of difference between freshly ground meat and the pre-packaged version.

From here, the possibilities open wide. Ground pork can be seasoned simply with salt and pepper for everyday cooking, or blended with aromatics like garlic, ginger, and scallions for Asian-inspired dishes. It also makes an excellent base for homemade sausage, whether spicy Italian, smoky paprika-rich Spanish, or a breakfast blend perfumed with sage.

With one pork shoulder, you can create several meals—tacos, meatballs, stir-fries, burgers, or stuffed vegetables. Grinding your own meat ensures better texture, fresher flavor, and full control over what goes into your recipe. Today’s purchase from Walmart may have started as a simple cut of pork, but it’s already on its way to becoming something delicious.
