Cantonese Steamed Chicken
– 1 whole chicken (about 1 kg), cleaned
– 2 cloves garlic, chopped
– 1 clove shallot, chopped
– 1 tbsp chopped ginger
– 2 tbsp Chinese soy sauce
– 1 tbsp sesame oil
– 1 tsp salt
– 1/2 tsp pepper powder
– 2 tbsp lime juice
– 2 pieces of spring onion, sliced
– 1 tsp hoisin sauce (optional)
How to make
1. Prepare a steamer, boil water.
2. Mix garlic, shallot, ginger, Chinese soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper powder in a bowl.
3. Brush the spice mixture all over the surface of the chicken.
4. Place the chicken in a steamer, cover with a lid.
5. Steam the chicken for 30-40 minutes or until cooked.
6. Remove the chicken, brush with lime juice.
7. Serve the chicken with a sprinkling of sliced spring onions and your favorite sauce
Tips
– Make sure the chicken is fresh and clean before steaming.
– If you want a stronger flavor, you can add a little Chinese soy sauce or sesame oil.
– Adjust the steaming time according to the size of the chicken.
Variations
– Cantonese steamed chicken: add a little Chinese soy sauce and sesame oil to give it a Cantonese flavor.
– Szechuan steamed chicken: add a little Szechuan chili and sesame oil to give it a Szechuan flavor
