Variations & Tips
If sauerkraut is a bit too tangy for some family members, you can mix in a chopped apple or a tablespoon of brown sugar to sweeten the dish. For a smoky twist, try adding a few slices of cooked bacon or smoked sausage. Some people enjoy adding a few thinly sliced carrots for additional sweetness and color. If you’re short on time, you can prepare everything the night before and store in the refrigerator, then start the slow cooker in the morning.
