Instructions for Making Oatmeal Apple Cake
1. Preheat the Oven:
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8-inch square baking pan (or a similar-sized pan) to prevent the cake from sticking.

2. Prepare the Dry Ingredients:
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the flour, oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk everything together until well combined.

3. Cream the Butter and Sugar:
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed. Beat until the mixture is light and fluffy, which should take about 3-4 minutes.

4. Add the Eggs and Vanilla:
Add the eggs, one at a time, to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition. Then, mix in the vanilla extract until well incorporated.

5. Incorporate the Dry Ingredients and Wet Ingredients:
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk and sour cream. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter.

6. Add the Apples and Optional Nuts:
Gently fold in the chopped apples and nuts (if using) into the batter, making sure they are evenly distributed throughout.

7. Bake the Cake:
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth out the top with a spatula. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top of the cake is browning too quickly, you can cover it with aluminum foil for the last 10 minutes of baking.

8. Cool the Cake:
Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. After that, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

9. Serve and Enjoy:
Once the cake has cooled, slice it into squares and serve. You can enjoy it plain, or for an extra special treat, top it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A drizzle of caramel sauce also pairs wonderfully with this cake.
