Here’s a fun and delicious recipe for Twisted Sugar Doughnuts! These soft, sweet, and slightly crispy doughnuts are twisted into a fun shape and coated with cinnamon sugar for the perfect treat.

Ingredients:

For the Doughnuts:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F or 43°C)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for the dough)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Stir to dissolve the yeast, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. Mix the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the eggs, softened butter, and vanilla extract. Pour in the activated yeast mixture and stir until the dough starts to come together.
  3. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  4. Let the Dough Rise:
    • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 2: Shape the Doughnuts

  1. Roll Out the Dough:
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
  2. Cut the Doughnuts:
    • Use a doughnut cutter or two round cookie cutters (one larger for the outer edge, and one smaller for the center) to cut out doughnut shapes. Gather the dough scraps, roll them out again, and cut additional doughnuts.
  3. Twist the Doughnuts:
    • Take each doughnut and gently twist the two ends to create a “twisted” shape. Place the twisted doughnuts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Second Rise:
    • Cover the shaped doughnuts with a towel and let them rise for about 30 minutes, until they puff up.

Step 3: Fry the Doughnuts
