This homemade cough syrup made with bay leaves and onion is a natural and effective remedy to stop coughing within a day and cleanse the lungs within a few days. Both ingredients have powerful anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties, making them excellent for soothing a cough, clearing mucus, and improving respiratory health.
Ingredients:
- 3-4 bay leaves (fresh or dried)
- 1 large onion (sliced)
- 2 cups water
- 3 tablespoons honey (optional, for sweetness and added soothing properties)
- Juice of 1 lemon (optional, for extra vitamin C boost)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Onion and Bay Leaves
- Slice the Onion:
- Peel and thinly slice the onion into rings or wedges.
- Boil the Water:
- In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
Step 2: Add the Ingredients
- Add Bay Leaves and Onion:
- Once the water is boiling, add the sliced onion and bay leaves to the pot.
- Simmer:
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the beneficial properties of the onion and bay leaves to infuse into the water.
Step 3: Strain the Syrup
- Strain the Mixture:
- After simmering, remove the pot from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Strain the liquid into a clean bowl or jar, discarding the solids.
Step 4: Sweeten and Enhance (Optional)
- Add Honey and Lemon (Optional):
- Once the mixture is slightly cooled, stir in 3 tablespoons of honey for added sweetness and soothing properties. Honey also helps to coat the throat and ease coughs.
- You can also add the juice of 1 lemon for an extra boost of vitamin C to strengthen the immune system and enhance lung cleansing.
Step 5: Store and Use
- Store the Syrup:
- Store the syrup in a clean glass jar with a lid. Keep it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Dosage:
- Take 1 tablespoon of the syrup every 2-3 hours throughout the day to stop coughing and clear the lungs.
- For children, reduce the dosage to 1 teaspoon every 2-3 hours.
