1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
- Warm the milk (not too hot!) and mix it with the egg and softened butter. Gradually combine wet and dry ingredients until a dough forms.
- Knead for 8–10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes with a stand mixer until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
2. Make the Apple Filling:
- In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Cook for 5–7 minutes until the apples soften slightly but aren’t mushy.
- Stir in the lemon juice to brighten the flavors and let the mixture cool.
3. Assemble the Rolls:
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle (about 12×18 inches).
- Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.
- Roll the dough tightly from the long edge, then cut into 12 even slices.
- Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise again for 30 minutes.
4. Bake the Rolls:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and cooked through.
5. Glaze the Rolls:
- In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Drizzle the glaze over warm rolls and enjoy!
